Understanding the B Impact Score

You’ve probably seen the B Corp logo on packaging or company websites—often linked to doing better for people and the planet. What you may not know is that the ‘B’ stands for Benefit for all – an idea that business can and should create positive impact beyond profit.

But how is that “positive impact” actually measured?

That’s where the B Impact Score comes in. It’s the heart of B Corp Certification, providing a structured way to evaluate how a business operates—not just financially, but socially and environmentally too.

How is the B Impact Score calculated?

The B Impact Score is based on the B Impact Assessment (BIA) – a comprehensive, globally recognised tool developed by the non-profit B Lab. It covers 5 key areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.

The BIA isn’t a one-size-fits-all checklist. It’s tailored to each business’s size, sector, and location. A small clothing brand won’t be assessed the same way as a multinational software company. This means the process is fair and meaningful.

What’s more, the B Impact Score is cumulative, meaning businesses can perform strongly in some areas while identifying others as opportunities for growth. This flexibility reflects the diversity of industries and business models, allowing companies to be recognised for their unique strengths, while encouraging ongoing improvement.

The assessment asks in-depth questions about both day-to-day practices and long-term commitments. It explores measurable impacts – like emissions or worker wellbeing – but also dives into policies, decision-making processes and stakeholder engagement.

To become certified, companies must reach a minimum verified score of 80 out of a possible 200 points. No easy feat given that most companies score around 50-55 on their first try. Scores are reviewed by B Lab, and verified through documentation, interviews and audits. Today, every certified B Corp must recertify every 3 years, ensuring ongoing progress and accountability.

B&C’s B Impact Score: 99

At B&C we’re proud to have achieved a verified B Impact Score of 99. It’s a milestone that reflects the values we work hard to embed throughout our business. We see this as a benchmark for future progress.

B Corp Profile

Our unique strengths

These strengths reflect our purpose in action and played a key role in earning our B Corp certification.

  • Governance: As a mission-locked company, our commitment to social and environmental responsibility is written into our legal structure.
  • Environment: Our work around resource conservation, toxin reduction, and efforts to protect land and biodiversity helped us stand out.

  • Community: We were recognised for our approach to responsible supply chain management, working closely with partners to raise standards and build long-term, ethical relationships.

These are areas we care deeply about, and while we’re pleased with our score, we know there’s always more to do.

A tool for progress

The B Impact Score helps us track where we are, where we’ve improved and where we still want to go. It’s a reminder that responsible business isn’t a fixed destination, it’s a journey.

Being part of the global B Corp community connects us with like-minded organisations using business as a force for good. Together we’re showing that people, planet and profit can thrive together, when purpose leads the way.
